Shooting in Caves (… Tombs Actually)
In this article, photographer Luciano Gerini shares insights gained while accompanying his daughter, an archaeology student, on field trips in central Italy. Exploring ancient Etruscan and Roman tombs carved from volcanic tuff, he developed practical techniques for capturing their unique atmosphere. With modest equipment – a Fujifilm X30, LED torches, and a tripod – Gerini demonstrates how careful lighting and methodical shooting can preserve both detail and mood in these challenging subterranean environments.
