One’s own shadow, brilliant light

There is a light I have recognised since childhood: the Mediterranean light falling over a humble town on the outskirts of Barcelona, Montcada i Reixac, where I grew up among intertwined roots from Guinea, Catalonia, Chile, France and Scotland, all stitched together beneath the same skin. And at the heart of it all was my mother, whom I loved deeply, from whom I learned to look at the world, and whom I miss every single day. “T’estimo, mama.”

I love reading, and books are always with me. I have travelled across four continents in search of different perspectives: different cultures, customs that are not my own, and lives that I learned to observe closely before I learned to photograph them. Another of my passions is music. The same soundtrack accompanies me both when taking photographs and when editing them, as though every project needed to beat to a single rhythm.

Photography has always been part of my life, through travel photographs, family events, celebrations and much more, long before it became my true passion. I am still learning and enjoying the journey, still refining a style that is very much a work in progress.

That style has a single obsession: the spirit of the person standing before me, without disguise. I am not looking for the pose that pleases most people. I am looking for what remains when someone stops posing. That is why I work with light, whether natural, studio or continuous, whatever is needed, always in the service of the story I want to tell, never the other way round. Along the way, I learned that there is a fine line between illuminating and dazzling, and that black and white does not forgive those who cross it. It is light and shadow without make-up, purer than colour, free from distraction.

I shoot with a Fujifilm X-H1 and a Fujinon EBC XC 50-230mm lens, while I save for a faster one. It is the brand my mentor recommended to me, and the one I know I will never leave. There are other brands, of course, but none has this aesthetic, this grip, this feeling of being alive in my hands. We are a team. My camera and I understand the same thing about the silence before the shutter is released.

The real work begins long before editing, with an idea and a model who knows, just as well as I do, what we are trying to achieve. I never meet someone simply to “take photos”. Every session is carefully planned, although I always leave a small opening for improvisation. I also dislike repeating myself. Every session should be unique, both for me and for the person in front of my camera. When it is over, I let the images rest before looking at them. I am not searching for the technically perfect photograph. I am searching for the one that communicates. I would rather have one photograph that says something than a thousand that say nothing.

All of this, my family, my neighbourhood, my books, my travels, that living Fuji in my hands, comes together in a single idea, the one that gives this text its title: every photographer, sooner or later, finds their own shadow and their own brilliant light. I am still revealing mine, one session at a time, in black and white, and sharing it at @jordik_photo.

Spanish Version:

Propia sombra, brillante luz
